Education & Learning at Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre
Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre are pleased to currently offer 3 different sessions catering for Key Stage 2, 3 and also youth organisations.
Day Session (4 hours, nominally 10am to 2pm) – primary designed for Key Stage 2 and to meet some of the National curriculum objectives.
Built around ‘putting yourself in their shoes’ in which your group arrives having completed some pre-visit activities we focus on individual stories of the personnel involved at RAF Metheringham and 106 Squadron, during World War 2. Through this immersive experience, your Key Stage 2 pupils will also learn skills such as team building, empathy, be able to practise their speaking and listening through role play and consider how best to handle objects that are over 75 years old. On arrival your pupils will step back in time and become a newly trained member of the RAF at the newly built RAF Metheringham (1943 – 1946). They will receive a sortie briefing before being split into 3 groups to rotate round a RAF Metheringham orientation, refresh their knowledge of the crew roles in the Lancaster bomber and learn about Sgt Bill Knaggs following his escape and evasion efforts to get back home. Before then experiencing the sounds and feelings of being in an original Air Ministry Air-raid shelter during a raid. Listen out for the All Clear! Phew, time for some lunch in our original wartime gymnasium |
The afternoon will see the group split into 2 where they’ll rotate between: our Ditching drama, a narrator let session where we retell the real-life story of John Sargeant’s crew, in a fun, engaging and action-packed adventure; And stepping inside our original World War 2 Dakota aeroplane KG651, learn about who built it, flew in it and the crew who flew it; could it be you sitting in the cockpit?
At the end of the day, take home your very own log book and partake in a remembrance ceremony before departing. |
Evening Session (2 hours, nominally 7-9pm but we are flexible on this) – this session is built around some of the requirements for the Air activities badges for scouts and local history badges for girl-guides. However, the session can be tailored to suit any youth organisation requirements.
On arrival your pupils will step back in time and become a newly trained member of the RAF at the newly built RAF Metheringham (1943 – 1946), having completed a pre-visit information pack.
After a RAF Metheringham Orientation you’ll then experience the sounds and feelings of being in an original Air Ministry Air-raid shelter during a raid. Listen out for the All Clear! Heading to our original World War 2 Dakota aeroplane KG651, you’ll learn about who built it, flew in it and the crew who flew it; could it be you sitting in the cockpit? Following this there will be time to complete worksheets on the phonetic alphabet and flying controls or take part in a paper aeroplane competition. |
Our final session of the evening is our Ditching drama, a narrator let session where we retell the real-life story of John Sargeant’s crew, in a fun, engaging and action-packed adventure. The evening is wrapped up with a remembrance service before departing, with MAVC cloth badges for your fire blankets.
International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) joint visit (0930 - 1430, Wednesdays preferred) - focussed around WW2 history and STEM objectives for Key Stage 3. But would be suitable for older youth organisations.
Arriving at the IBCC you’ll start a journey back in time learning about Sgt Mohand Singh and the Lines Lancaster Bomber crew. Paying your respects at the memorial wall and learning about the role he and his crew undertook. (This section will be facilitated by volunteers at the IBCC).
You’ll then travel back further in time as you head to Metheringham Airfield and have lunch in our WW2 gymnasium before then exploring the site on your own completing the Lines Crew Activity Booklet (this has guidance on timings).
Once you’ve completed the history aspects you’ll then head to the Dakota hangar to complete a STEM booklet on Hydraulics, Navigation and Radios which have been developed in partnership with STEM Ambassador Hub East Midlands.
