Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre given award for engaging new audiences at the museum - The Sandford Award for Informal Learning
We are pleased to announce that on the 3rd of September 2019, Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre was awarded the Sandford Award for Informal Learning (SAIL). We received this award for work we have done towards engaging new audiences at the museum. We piloted a children’s trail and the money from the Sandford Cascade given to us for the SAIL project meant we could carry out a trial trail and provide transport to our site for the support group CANadda; enabling them to take part in a film and skills project.
The project ran during 2018 and engaged two different audiences, families with children and autistic young adults and their carers. Our Curator, Caterina Scott, worked with members of the Friends of Metheringham Airfield including designer Pam Thomas, to develop a children’s trail that families could use as a mini guide around the museum. They had a map of the site and children looked for images of our mascot Mr Fox where the answers to questions could be found. This trial enabled us to gain feedback from those who took part and produce an improved version for the 2019 season.
The second project involved our curator again working with CANadda, a support group for young autistic adults and their carers. The project enabled the group to visit the museum a number of times, to learn new skills by using an iPad and the app iMovie and then to produce a film of their visits. The group were also able to give guidance as to sensory aspects of the museum rooms that could affect those with autism. To view the films produced by the group, the film shown at the award ceremony and other Sandford films relating to other SAIL recipients please see the links below.
